Solar on a Listed Palace

When the Munich Heritage Protection Office recommended a solar roofing system for a listed palace in Bavaria, there was only one product they had in mind.

Klinik Angermühle, a family-owned psychosomatic clinic in Deggendorf, Bavaria, has been operating from a protected Stadtpark palace since the Buchmüller family acquired it in 2003. It was not their first heritage building. In 1999, they had already purchased and restored Offenberg Castle nearby, establishing a reputation in the region as careful, responsible owners of listed properties. That track record was part of why they were chosen as buyers when the palace came up for sale.

When the aging metal roof needed replacing, the family had a clear set of requirements. They wanted a full structural renovation. They wanted solar energy. And they wanted a result that respected the historic character of the building, not something bolted on and visible from the street.

The question of whether solar even belonged on a Denkmalschutz-protected building was one they approached with genuine scepticism. Heritage protection in Germany is strict. But when they consulted the Munich Heritage Protection Office, the heritage office did not just give permission. They recommended Roofit.Solar.

The Roofit.Solar Velario® integrated solar roof replaced the old metal roof entirely. Using a standing seam installation method with over a hundred years of roofing heritage, the system combines a full structural roof with 83.11 kWp of building-integrated photovoltaic capacity in a single product. From the street, it reads as a roof, not a solar installation.

For the Buchmüller family, the aesthetic result mattered as much as the energy output. Conventional panels on a historic facade were never an option. What they wanted was something that looked as though it had always belonged there.

Since completion in 2025, the roof has drawn attention well beyond the clinic itself. Passers-by stop regularly to ask about it. Members of the Deggendorf town council have organised official visits to the Stadtpark to see the installation in person, and are now exploring how the same approach might apply to future municipal projects in the city.
